The Suit

by Dominique Beverton

Suit from biba

Ultimately, we have Coco Chanel to thank for popularising the female suit. How cool did Marlene Dietrich look wearing this in the 1930s? She broke the rules of convention, making the suit an acceptable choice for women.

Then along came the 1960s and another iconic suit was born. 'Le Smoking' by YSL - a female tuxedo. Oozing style and sex appeal, it's still seen as unconventional even though celebrities wore it, Catherine Deneuve being the first!

But when Bianca Jagger wore it in the 1970s, she took it to a whole new level. She will always be my number one white suit inspiration - who else?

But a white suit can be tricky to pull off, so try easing yourself into it, perhaps by choosing a more practical colour. This one is from H&M - linen jacket £69.99, trousers £49.99.

But we still don't see woman dressed in suits that much, especially on a more glamorous level. Why? When they can be so much more charismatic and stylish not to mention individual than a dress. For me, when I wear a suit, (and not always matching I hasten to add) I do feel different, and I think people perceive you differently as well. The innate power of the suit, possibly?

There were some extreme silhouettes at London Fashion Week. Gareth Pugh

redefined the 1980s power suit with a political stance for #timesup. Could those shoulder pads get any bigger? Female empowerment, yes! Shoulder pads, maybe not.

Victoria Beckham didn't disappoint with her new collection either. Some great tailoring, gorgeous colours and fabrics to boot. Who doesn't love a corduroy suit? Thanks Lady V.

On a more realistic level, the high street is awash with them in every shape and form.

Here's my Spring high street edit and some cool accessories to go with them, in cool fresh colours and pastel shades.

Jacket £79.99 and trousers £39.99 - Zara

I think the soft colour of this suit would work really well with some white loafers, but I do love a trainer.

Wool blazer £150 and trousers £89 arket

For a smarter look, team with these.

Leather pumps £135 arket

Favourite of all time! The colour, the fit, the style. It's more expensive but hey, remember, as YSL said, it's all about the cut!

£135 & other stories.

Team with a pair of kitten heel boots for a more sophisticated vibe.

Mehry Mu £390 bluebird shop at Jigsaw.

These wonderful velvet bags would work really well with a suit.

I must end where I started, with Chanel.

Team this jacket with anything, say no more. Except there are alternatives.

Zara £69.99

A good suit should be timeless and last forever.
