The kindness of strangers
By Michaela Mir
At the ripe old age of 47, I've been working for 30 years. In 2004, after the birth of my daughter, I became a freelancer in an attempt to achieve a better work/life balance.
Eleven years later and after much deliberation, I started my own business and Creative Living London was born.
Running your own business is the most wonderful and stressful thing, all rolled in to one.
You are your own boss.......tick
You call all the shots......tick
You can have a day off or holiday when you want ......tick
You're in charge of where your business goes....tick
The reality is often not quite this fabulous!
Having worked for other people for most of my life, in 2015, a good friend of mine @samanthajpullen finally persuaded me to jump of the cliff and go it alone.
Despite all the stress, drama, hard, work, late nights, lack of holidays, days off, weekend working and overwhelming responsibility, my goodness how it's worth it!
Here I am, three years on, and the next chapter is about to begin – all due to the kindness of strangers.
One of the things having my own business has allowed me to do is decide how I allocate my time. Over the last few years, I've decided to spend some of that time volunteering at local charities.
I've been lucky enough to work in roles that use my skill set and experience and OH how it has changed my outlook!
The most amazing thing I have experienced is the kindness of strangers. The wonderful, kind, inspirational and amazing people, who give up their time, regardless of financial circumstances, to help others and improve other people's lives. Many of these people are no longer strangers, instead they have become my friends.
So, my blog today is dedicated to them. As @irrelevantstyling said in her Valentines’ blog, love should be for everyone, get together with friends or family, appreciate each other, which is key. We all want to feel loved and cherished. Thank you so much to these wonderful volunteers, who have changed the direction of my working life.
In May of this year, I will be embarking on a new adventure with a new partner and help from some of the lovely ladies shown above, along with more amazing volunteers who have decided to give up their time to help launch and run a new charity boutique opening in Chislehurst. Over the next few months, I will document our journey on this blog.
